Borderless Networks

What is Borderless Network?

Borderless Networks is Cisco's next-generation architecture which delivers the new workspace experience, connecting anyone, anywhere, using any device, to any resource while being secure, reliable and seamless.

The Borderless Network combines innovations across routing, switching, wireless, acceleration, and security technology and products. It is a long term vision, which builds on architectural approach to help companies and organizations create a platform for all of their needs in applications, communications and business processes. The architectural approach allows IT organizations to scale and create new experiences. A good example is the way we are introducing new devices and becoming device independent. Imagine you have a Smartphone user with their personal phone, as well as somebody in a company video conferencing room, if they now use a video conference, the network would use its intelligence to allow transcoding between the two video streams without any intervention from the users.

Borderless Networks architectures are a vision of Cisco and are starting now, some elements are already available; others will become available over time. Cisco's five-phase plan for Borderless Networks provides a roadmap to the advanced features and services that will help enable the next-generation workspace experience.

  • Phase 1: Borderless Network Services - Delivering innovations IN and ON the network that optimize network availability, performance, and security.
  • Phase 2: Borderless User Services - Embedding key services spanning mobility, security, and application performance across all elements of the network.
  • Phase 3: Borderless Policy - Implementing a unified policy framework for managing security, identity, and access to the network and network resources.
  • Phase 4: Borderless Integration Framework - Bringing end-to-end network-to-endpoint intelligence through open, extensible interfaces into the network.
  • Phase 5: Borderless Experience - Converging services and systems to provide a superior customer and employee experience regardless of location, device, or application.

Elements you can already find today are Energywise or the self defending networks. The first keystone of Borderless Networks Cisco has released is the Integrated Services Router Generation 2 (ISR G2), a routing platform which incorporates a lot of technologies in a single platform to be easily absorbed by branch or small business. In February 2010 Cisco will announce more elements to the Borderless Network and, in the Cisco IOS software, you will see continuous enhancement in different technologies to create more interaction between network devices, therefore allowing the borderless network to become a reality which will change the experiences of employees, partners and customers.
