My role

My role is to liaise with schools, colleges and universities who teach ICT courses, specifically Cisco Networking Academies and to offer advice and guidance about career opportunities working for Preferred.

We recruit networking engineers who are trained and ready to respond to any client requirement, anywhere in the world and we are keen to see people with CCNA or any IT or business qualification, especially if they have previous work experience.

Your CV

Here are some basic tips:

  • Should be clearly laid out and easy to read
  • Should contain your name, address, email address and contact phone numbers
  • Avoid flashy and complicated templates, graphics and photos
  • Start with a brief description of yourself, what motivates you and what you are looking for in a job
  • List your education results and qualifications achieved to date and any relevant work experience, if you have it
  • Try to keep the whole document to less than two pages

Your interview

Remember your main goal is to make a good impression:

  • Arrive ten minutes before your appointment
  • Spend the time clearing your thoughts and mentally going through what you have to say
  • Remember your interviewer wants you to be the person he/she is looking for, so you have to show them that you are.

Employers are looking for someone who knows their subject, is confident without appearing arrogant and able to communicate well.

Interviews can be very stressful if you aren't familiar with them, but try to relax during the meeting, listen to what is being asked of you, if you haven't understood something, politely ask for it to be repeated and think about your response before you answer.

Dress to impress

  • Suits and ties aren't necessary, but a clean shirt, jacket and trousers are.
  • Don't wear jeans or trainers, avoid extreme hairstyles, visible tattoos and face jewellery.
  • Remember employers are looking for people to represent their company and a competent, professional-looking individual will make a better impression than someone who looks like they haven't bothered to try.

If you are late for an interview, (or any appointment) always call and let the person know you are delayed, rather than hope they won't notice or care, they will.

Learn from mistakes

I once had a student arrive three hours late for an interview in jeans and a hoodie and couldn't understand why I wouldn't see him. I explained why and agreed to give him another interview. The next time he was fifteen minutes early and wearing a suit and tie, and had a successful interview.
