Mohamed says:
Finding my current position wasn't as hard as finding my first job in IT. After more than 10 years in the IT security, companies do come to you, especially if you have other skills or qualification in languages or business.
The most difficult part was getting that first experience working in IT.
If you have a degree in IT, it is easier but you can get into IT without having previous IT knowledge as long as you are prepared to learn on job and have a positive attitude.
I personally started on a call centre answering and logging calls whilst getting trained on basic windows troubleshooting. From there I attended Microsoft courses and did lots of personal reading.
Obviously experiencing user issues over the phone and later on on-site was the best way to learn.
Every week is different but main tasks are always recurring
Catch up on emails and team briefings. Phone calls with various partners.
Public webinar in the morning and response to an RFI/RFP (Request for Information) in the afternoon.
Customer visit(s) with a partner – sales presentation + technical demo.
Talk/presentation at a partner event
Webinars for specific prospects in the morning. Work on demo equipment – software upgrade and preparation for the following week.
Other weeks I would visit partners in various countries in EMEA for staff training and customer visits.
This is an interesting job with lots of diversity.
My advice to people starting out in a career in IT is to have an open mind and be prepared to do what ever it takes to gain knowledge and experience.
