Stefan Angerer

Some things are just made for each other. Take IT degrees and Networking Academies, for example. Huge numbers of IT undergraduates and other students augment their university studies with the insights, training and practical experience offered by NetAcads.

Sometimes they join entirely through their own motivation. Sometimes, when required to do so by their course. One of the reasons both students and professors are so convinced that NetAcads are vital to IT studies is the sheer variety of technology participants are exposed to as part of their program.

One of the many students who have made a success of the university-NetAcad synergy and the diversity of technologies on offer is Stefan Angerer, 28 years old, and now a Network Consultant at the Austrian company of Marcus Izmir Informationsmanagement, AG (MII).

It is a highly varied and absorbing job, as Stefan explains: “I am responsible for the Network Infrastructure and Firewall/Core IP Services units in the business.”

“Other companies come to us if they need solutions or help with existing implementations, and I have particular responsibility for LANs and WANs, network security, unified communications – including IP Telephony, WLANs, and VPN,”
he explains.

Stefan has worked at MII since August 2004, starting out as Head of Networking, and moving into his current role as of January this year.

Before that, he completed a full eight semesters of NetAcad, gaining both his CCNA and CCNP. Meanwhile, he managed to squeeze in a degree at the University of Applied Sciences at St.Pölten, in his native Austria.

Other than his qualifications, Stefan’s experience with Cisco was decisive in gaining his first job. As he points out: “MII is a Cisco Premier Partner”.

That experience was to become more relevant than ever when Stefan was promoted to his current position. He explains: “One important part of my job is the combination of Cisco and Microsoft products – for example, Cisco Callmanager and Presence Server and MS Office Communications Server, or combining Cisco WLAN with Microsoft PKI”.

So what, in Stefan’s opinion, had he found most useful on the course? “You begin to understand how and why things like the Internet work,” he remarks. “How all the pieces of the puzzle fit together – everything from cabling over TCP/IP to applications.”

But it wasn’t all plain sailing, as he makes clear: “Understanding all those routing protocols was not too easy, I can tell you!”
