Real World Knowledge is the NetAcad Advantage

Theory has its place, but nothing beats putting it into practice by rolling up your sleeves and getting down to solving genuine problems in a life-like environment.

That has been the experience of thousands of Networking Academy alumni, no more so than Guillem Vega, who started his ICT career in 2003 in the highly theoretical environment of Barcelona’s La Salle University.

He says: "The real-world experience I gained in NetAcad opened as many doors as the certificates and exams I passed. Without it, I really doubt I would be in such a good position as I am today."

That position is currently Systems Engineer at Cisco, Barcelona, which he gained in August last year. Previously, he worked as an Assistant Systems Engineer. His career at Cisco started much earlier, however, in 2004.

During his university studies he joined Cisco's Barcelona office as an intern in order to broaden his professional horizons. He was not disappointed, and had the good fortune to be posted to Amsterdam for a year on a technical and sales program.

On returning, he widened his knowledge and practical experience still further by joining the Networking Academy. According to him: "It has been a very significant element in my professional life."

There he studied hard to become a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), which led him to further self-study in the areas of Voice and Security Certifications, Business and Sales training, as well as other avenues.

Guillem believes that continuously updating one's knowledge as he has done is essential if an ICT professional is to survive in today's technological jungle.

He advises that: "Access to a steady, ongoing stream of certification programs allows you to stay in contact with the enemy and experience the latest features of the sector."

Becoming au fait with all the right equipment is essential, of course, and Guillem cites NetAcad for giving him the inside track on the correct kit.

"It was one of the great advantages of the program that we used the latest Cisco equipment. It was totally available throughout the whole course allowing me to bring my theoretical knowledge directly into the real world of IT."
